Filing by Internet
As far as possible we try to embrace new technology to improve the efficiency of the office and enhance the service that we provide to clients. Our tax software allows us to send the completed Tax Return to you by email and as there is no longer a legal requirement for there to be a wet signature you can simply authorise the submission by email as well. The majority of Tax Returns that we complete are now filed by internet (FBI) which is much more efficient than sending in paper forms as repayments are issued within 3-4 days rather than 3-4 months. Notices of coding are also updated more promptly ensuring that the tax you pay monthly is a more accurate representation of your current circumstances.
The deadline for electronic submissions is longer than for paper forms and you are allowed until 31 January instead of 31 October before you incur a penalty. Another key benefit of FBI is that underpayments of tax can be collected by an adjustment to your PAYE coding where the submission of the Tax Return is made before 30 December rather than 30 September. Whilst many accountants and tax practitioners levy an additional charge for electronic submission of Tax Returns, Tax Management for Clergy does not.
Clergy Tax Return Electronic Filing Service
Unfortunately you can’t file the Tax Return electronically yourself as the Revenue’s own software does not support the Minister of Religion schedule. You would have to buy a commercial package which is very expensive, so those clergy that manage their own affairs are unable to reap the advantages of electronic submission. However, for a small fee we can transmit your information electronically for you. The submission will be based purely on the entries you have made on your paper Return. The benefits are as follows:
- There is no uncertainty over your tax position as we will automatically calculate this for you, include the relevant amounts on the Tax Return and provide you with a copy of the computation.
- If a payment of tax is due on 31 January you will not have to wait for the Inland Revenue to confirm the appropriate sum, which could take several months.
- You will know that your Tax Return has been received by the Inland Revenue as we will send you a copy of the electronic filing receipt.
- Repayments of tax will be paid to you in days rather than months.
- Your tax records are more up to date, specifically the PAYE coding notice, which determines the tax you pay monthly.
- You get more time as underpayments of tax up to £3000 can be collected through PAYE so long as the Return is filed before 30 December, some 3 months later than the paper Return deadline.

Payroll Electronic Filing
PAYE for employers is switching to online management, with employers with 50 or more employees already filing end of year returns online. In year forms, such as P45 and P46, will also increasingly have to be filed online and employers with less than 50 employees will have to switch to online filing by April 2011.
All payrolls dealt with in our bureau already have in year and end of year forms filed electronically regardless of the number of employees. Our costs for running a payroll are extremely competitive and if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.
I have used Tax Management for Clergy since the service began. I have been more than satisfied with their services and have introduced several colleagues, from Bishops through to clergy colleagues and friends, to assistant clergy who have joined me in my role as a training incumbent and their colleagues entering ordained ministry. I also make use of the link with Independent Financial Management for Clergy, offering independent and from my experience financially sound advice. I have no hesitation in commending this friendly, usable and obliging quality service to all who might need to seek tax or financial service relating to clergy appointments.
